My Favourite Spots: Devon, England

South Devon is by far my most beloved place outside of London. I'm very lucky to have a connection to this beautiful region of England. I have the pleasure of spending time there with my partner's family about once a month (and more frequently in the summer). It's become somewhat of a sanctuary for us, the ideal place to slow down and leave the smog and the stresses of city life behind if only just for a weekend. If the time between visits stretches a little too long, I can feel the longing in my bones for the fresh sea air, winding country lanes, and open fields. In anticipation of a whole week long break in Devon over the holidays, I thought I'd share just a few of my favourite places to fill the belly and the stunning countryside and coastal spots to walk it off.

Get there:

While it's a pretty hefty schlep in the car, sometimes clocking in at 4+ hours in traffic (totally worth it!), the train journey is a fairly painless option. Departing from London Paddington it will get you to the quaint little town of Totnes in just under 3hrs. You will however need a car to whizz around all the beautiful spots this region has to offer.

Eat:

Get your caffeine and breakfast snacks at bakery/cafe The Almond Thief. Don't miss their freshly baked cardamon buns and pasteis de nata and breakfast eggs. OK, basically everything at this place is really really tasty.

Take a riverside walk from Totnes to Sharpham Vineyard for local wine and cheese.

Dinner at The Riverford Field Kitchen where you eat what you're given and you're happy about it because it comes in the form of generous sharing plates of the most beautiful, seasonal and organic dishes.

Pop to Prince Hall Country House Hotel on the edge of Dartmoor National Park for an afternoon tea by the fire in this cosy country house. Dogs are more than welcome here.

Do:

A walk on Dartmoor National Park is essential. If you're lucky you might even get up close and personal with some wild ponies. Head for a wander in the ancient Wistmans' Wood.

My absolute favourite beach Mattiscombe Sands. You can either shelter between the rocks and enjoy the sea view and swimming or go on a little adventure along the coast to discover coves and little hidden beaches.

Head down to Dittisham for some crabbing on the pontoon at dawn and follow it up with a cosy pint at an original country pub Ferry Boat Inn.

Shop:

Cast Made & Co is the home of the contemporary leather goods brand Cast Made and it transforms into a little pop up shop several times a year. Each installment is impecably curated by Lucie Cast herself and is a must visit one-stop-shop for beautiful designer jewellery, leather goods, homewares and clothing. It's located on the high street in the heart of Totnes.

When visiting The Zero Waste Food Shop in Totnes bring your own containers to fill with yummy organic, plant based, wholefoods. The dried mango and raw chocolate covered almonds make for exceptional walking snacks.
